Angel Redmond

Angel Redmond discusses the history and importance of Stephens-Lee High School, the all-Black institution in Asheville, North Carolina that was closed down in 1965 during desegregation. Redmond, who was raised in Arden, has lived in Asheville for 30 years and is the facility supervisor at Stephens-Lee Recreation Center. The recreation center was all that was left of the school, which was referred to as the "Castle on the Hill."

There were "a lot of Blacks" in Asheville compared to Arden.

Isaac Dickson was influential in education and business.

How do you choose between "teaching the Black youth how to survive or reminding them of their history?"

The alumni room retains the spirit of Stephens-Lee.

"Immerse yourself in what was going on in Black Asheville."

I enjoyed "people watching" at The Block.

"I admire looking at the 1926 yearbook."
